Lately, I've been realizing that certain words or concepts just have unexplainable feelings going along with them, which are sometimes stronger than the colors (and some of these words and concepts dont have colors). For example...this isn't really a word or concept, but a song: if I hear a song I feel some kind of other attachment going along with it besides the sounds. Sometimes it brings back a memory so strongly that it's incredible to me. Another example (besides a song) is the raisin bran box. The image of the box (not the cereal itself), brings back a HUGE memory feeling - and something more that I can't quite grasp. I know that we often had raisin bran in the cabinet when i was little, but the memory that I get from the box seems to be more than a memory. What frustrates me is that I can't get any kind of concrete example to go by...it's more of a feeling that there's something more. This also happens when I can't quite think of a word - it's on the tip of my tongue - I can "feel" the word and its color (but also more than its color), but I can't figure out what it is. Does this sound like it has to do with synesthesia? Does anyone else know what I'm talking about?

My guess is that a memory association isn't syn related. Everyone can relate to seeing/smelling/tasting/hearing something that suddenly, very strongly, reminds them of something. For me, the smell of percolated coffee 'takes me back' to being on exchange in Germany and sitting in a specific classroom. Everyone experiences these (you know how people say smell is strongly associated with memory?), so I don't think they count as syn. However, I could be wrong.

If the stimulus is something that has significance because of something in your past (the box, perhaps the song), then I'm inclined to agree with Emma - it's more likely to be non-synesthetic.

Getting the colour of the word when you're trying to remember what it is - that does sound like it's connected to syn! As for the 'feel', it depends on what that 'feel' is - it may again be a non-synesthetic association, or it may be another element of your synesthetic response to the word.

YES!

I don't know if it is syn (sorry), but I've had this. The thing that caused the strongest of these sensations was an advert for a TV/computer screen (I think) on a billboard (whatever it's called) on the way to college. It had perfectly-shaped computer generated coloured balls 'coming out' of the screen in the picture and it kept bringing forward a memory feeling as you describe, but I have absolutely NO IDEA what the memory was.

I don't know if the memory exists or not and I'd LOVE to know, but I can't for the life of me think what it is.

But anyway, I'm glad someone else has experienced this, whether it is syn or not  thumbs up

Yay! I'm glad someone knows what I'm talking about! And yes, it probably isn't syn-related, but it was something I couldn't really figure out.

As for the feel...here's an example. I'm sure most of us synnees here get a certain reaction from the name Esther. To me, its wheat-colored with a little light green, and it feels fuzzy. But fuzzy isn't that specific. If my syn was a little stronger I would probably be able to describe the reaction more accurately and in more detail. Sometimes, when I don't know the word, I can "feel" it, but it's not an actual physical touch feeling (my syn is never projected but I mean something relating to a physical feeling). So when thinking about a word that's on the tip of my tongue, I might be able to say "it's kind of fuzzy and has some mint green" or "its heavy and thick" but I won't know the actual word. I'm pretty sure this is syn-related.

I know what you mean about the evoked memory feeling being HUGE - for me the feeling evoked by those coloured balls was overwhelming!
